Our roots are so deep, that it is hard to say since when we produce wine. For centuries, surely. Long ago in the past, we produced the wine for home consumption, a big house, with many generations and families that lived together. Today we produce 3 million and a half of bottles a year, but the love for the vine never changed. A real passion that has been cultivated and matured during generations and in the end brought to one result. It will be Vincenzo Spinelli the first one to face the challenge, in other words, the commercial enterprise: “We have the land and the vine: if we can make the good wine for us, why can’t we make it also for the others?”.
In the beginning of the seventies the consumption still has a common character. It is sold in the wholesale, but for Vincenzo the quality is always in his mind. He will have to wait about ten years, when the sons Carlo and Adriano will work full time in the company to give a crucial impulse to his project. The production capacity increases and, with great care, they start to control all the production stages, starting from the selection of the grapes, to the vinification and to the bottling. The quality is, now, the rallying cry. Therefore, the commercial strategies change and are refined, and so is the development of the sales network.
In the past century, the last big leap happens with an expansion of the company in 1992, that represents the crowning achievement of a work. With the new and wide production rooms and with advanced machines and equipment, Vincenzo Spinelli finally completes the project, for which he spent a life for: a company able to combine high quality with high production volume.
And we have already reached today’s story.
Today the Cantine Spinelli produces more than 3,5 million bottles of Abruzzi Doc wine (controlled origin denomination) per year, of which 70% are destined for export. The rural tradition is the one that wanted the grape to be squashed down with the feet. The feeling of love and respect, that binds us to the land and to the raw material, has been kept alive. Besides that, the company is today well-advanced in all the techniques of cultivation, manufacturing and ageing.
The production area of the grapes is a vast geographic area between the Frentane hills and the mid Sangro, in the province of Chieti: a zone that is among the most important ones in Italy and is particularly suitable for the cultivation of the vine.
The vinification takes place according to all the rules that guide the production of quality wines. It is continuously improved thanks to the help of the most competent oenologists throughout Italy. The company uses underground premises for the storage and the ageing of wines, where natural temperature fluctuates between 18 and 22°C. Since 1999, a new premise is used, in which the maturation and the ageing of the wines (principally red ones) in oak barrels of Slavonia and barrique takes place.
The growing appreciation from clients certainly represents for us the best confirmation for the quality of our work. We are also proud of the numerous acknowledgments that our wines have received in the past years, during the most important international competitions in this field. But the punctiliousness is part of our character: we want to continue to improve.

How many grape harvests have passed since Vincenzo Spinelli decided to build his company? Many, almost forty. And yet today, you will find him still there, animated by the same contagious energy, following the work personally and dedicating all his time to it. It is hard to convince him to act differently, even today, when age and prosperity would permit it. Devotion, respect and passion for the work have always guided him: these are exactly the values that he has transmitted to his children and that he would like to transmit to his grandchildren today.
In this sense, our company is a family business: this means that everything that really counts is inside our history. It is connected to us and our land, and it has always been passed on. To this day we are still farmers in the innermost self: everything changes, grows, evolves with time, but not the heart of the family, the true way to face work and life. Today, the main keepers of this tradition are Carlo and Adriano Spinelli, the two sons of Vincenzo.
Carlo Spinelli personally controls the commercial activity, starting from the relationship with clients, agents, importers and ending with the care of the company image. A work carried out with meticulousness and attention to the smallest detail, as it is in his character. He feels at ease working in a team. He is supported by a group of high level consultants with international experience, who have been selected during the past years.
Adriano Spinelli is the keeper of the oenological knowledge. He is grown up in the company, between vats and barrels, and today he is a technical director, which is not an always easy role. He looks after all the aspects related to the production and the quality: if the wine is good, it is mainly his credit. He avails himself of the collaboration of Doctor Riccardo Brighigna, an oenologist, among the most quoted ones at an international level.
